FIRE Type Comparison
Types of FIRE
FIRE isn't one-size-fits-all. Different variations suit different lifestyles and comfort levels. Your target depends on how much annual spending you want to sustain in retirement.
Lean FIRE
Retire on a minimal budget โ typically $25,000โ$40,000/year. Requires disciplined frugality and often involves geographic arbitrage (living in lower-cost areas). FIRE number: $625Kโ$1M at the 4% rule.
Regular FIRE
Maintain your current standard of living without working. Based on your actual annual expenses multiplied by 25 (4% rule). The most common target for FIRE pursuers.
Fat FIRE
Retire with an upgraded lifestyle โ travel, dining, luxury. Typically targets $100,000โ$200,000+ in annual spending. Requires a portfolio of $2.5Mโ$5M+. Takes longer but offers maximum freedom.
Coast FIRE
Save aggressively early, then let compound growth do the work. Once you've saved enough that your portfolio will grow to your FIRE number by traditional retirement age, you only need to cover current expenses.
Barista FIRE
Save enough that investment growth plus a part-time income covers expenses. You leave your high-stress career but keep a low-key job for health insurance and spending money. Semi-retirement with a safety net.
The 4% Rule
The Trinity Study found that withdrawing 4% of your portfolio annually (adjusted for inflation) has a 95%+ chance of lasting 30+ years. Your FIRE number = Annual Expenses รท 0.04 = Annual Expenses ร 25.
How to Calculate Your FIRE Number
Your FIRE number is the investment portfolio size that generates enough passive income to replace your paycheck forever. The math is simple โ but the assumptions behind it matter.
The Core Formula
FIRE Number = Annual Expenses รท Safe Withdrawal Rate. At a 4% withdrawal rate, multiply your annual expenses by 25. If you spend $50,000/year, your FIRE number is $1,250,000. At 3.5%, multiply by approximately 28.6 โ yielding $1,428,571.
The Trinity Study
The 4% rule originates from the 1998 Trinity Study, which analyzed historical market returns over 30-year rolling periods. A balanced portfolio of 50โ75% stocks and 25โ50% bonds survived 95%+ of 30-year periods at a 4% initial withdrawal rate, adjusted annually for inflation.
Adjusting for Your Timeline
The Trinity Study covers 30-year retirements. If you plan to retire at 35, you need a 50โ60 year horizon. Consider using 3.25โ3.5% withdrawal rate for extra safety. Historical data shows that lower withdrawal rates dramatically reduce failure risk over longer timeframes.
Savings Rate Is Key
Your savings rate determines years to FIRE more than anything else. At 20% savings, FIRE takes ~37 years. At 50%, ~17 years. At 70%, ~8.5 years. Higher savings rates work doubly โ you save more AND prove you can live on less, lowering your FIRE number.
Investment Returns Matter
Historical S&P 500 returns average 10% nominal (7% inflation-adjusted). A diversified index portfolio is the most common FIRE investment vehicle. Even 1% higher returns can shave 2โ3 years off your timeline through compounding.
Building in a Safety Margin
Many FIRE planners add 10โ20% buffer to their number. If your calculated FIRE number is $1.2M, target $1.3โ1.4M. This accounts for unexpected expenses, healthcare cost inflation, and sequence-of-returns risk in early retirement years.
Strategies to Reach FIRE Faster
Accelerating your FIRE timeline requires attacking both sides of the equation โ increasing your income and reducing your expenses. Here are proven tactics used by successful FIRE achievers.
Increase Your Income
Negotiate raises, build high-income skills (engineering, sales, medicine), start side businesses, or freelance. Every additional dollar of income at a high savings rate goes directly toward your FIRE portfolio. Income growth is the fastest accelerator.
House Hack
Buy a multi-unit property, live in one unit, and rent the others. This can eliminate your largest expense โ housing. Many FIRE achievers cut their housing cost to zero or even profit from their living situation.
Automate Investments
Set up automatic transfers to brokerage accounts on payday. Dollar-cost averaging into low-cost index funds (VTSAX, VTI, FZROX) removes emotion and ensures consistent investing regardless of market conditions.
Optimize the Big Three
Housing, transportation, and food account for 60โ70% of most budgets. Downsize housing, drive a reliable used car (no car payments), and cook at home. Cutting these three categories has the most impact on savings rate.
Tax-Advantaged Accounts
Max out 401(k) ($23,000/year), Roth IRA ($7,000/year), and HSA ($4,150 individual). These accounts shelter investments from taxes, effectively giving you 15โ30% more growth. The Roth conversion ladder provides tax-free early access.
Geographic Arbitrage
Move to a lower-cost area โ either within your country or internationally. Living in Southeast Asia, Latin America, or Eastern Europe can reduce expenses by 50โ70% while maintaining quality of life, dramatically lowering your FIRE number.
