APR Calculator
Discover the true annual cost of borrowing. Our APR calculator factors in fees, points, and charges that the basic interest rate hides โ so you can compare loans on equal footing and make smarter borrowing decisions.
Interest Rate vs APR
What Is APR?
The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) represents the true yearly cost of borrowing money. Unlike the basic interest rate, APR includes origination fees, closing costs, discount points, and other charges โ giving you a single number to compare loan offers from different lenders.
Beyond the Interest Rate
A 5% interest rate with $2,000 in fees is more expensive than a 5.5% rate with no fees on a short-term loan. APR reveals these hidden costs by converting everything into a single annualized percentage.
Apples-to-Apples Comparison
The Truth in Lending Act (TILA) requires lenders to disclose APR so borrowers can compare offers fairly. Without APR, you'd need to manually add up fees across different loan structures.
Nominal vs Effective APR
Nominal APR is the simple annualized rate. Effective APR accounts for compounding within the year. Credit cards often compound daily, making the effective APR higher than the nominal APR.
APR vs Interest Rate: What's the Difference?
The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the principal. APR is the interest rate plus fees, expressed annually. APR is always equal to or higher than the stated interest rate โ the gap shows how much fees add to your cost.
Interest Rate
The percentage charged on your outstanding loan balance. It determines your monthly payment on the principal but doesn't include any upfront costs, origination fees, or closing charges.
APR (Annual Percentage Rate)
The total annualized cost of your loan including interest, origination fees, points, and mandatory charges. APR gives you the full picture of what the loan actually costs per year.
When APR Matters Most
For shorter-term loans, fees have a bigger impact on APR because they're spread across fewer years. A $1,000 fee on a 2-year loan raises APR more than the same fee on a 30-year mortgage.
How to Get a Lower APR
Reducing your APR can save you thousands over the life of a loan. Here are proven strategies to secure better rates.
Improve Your Credit Score
Lenders reward higher credit scores with lower rates. Pay bills on time, reduce credit utilization below 30%, and dispute errors on your credit report to boost your score before applying.
Shop Multiple Lenders
APRs vary widely between lenders. Get quotes from at least 3โ5 lenders including banks, credit unions, and online lenders. Multiple inquiries within 14 days count as one hard pull on your credit.
Negotiate Fees
Origination fees, application fees, and processing charges are often negotiable. Ask lenders to reduce or waive fees โ especially if you have competing offers from other institutions.
Choose the Right Term
Shorter loan terms typically come with lower interest rates. A 3-year auto loan often has a lower rate than a 6-year loan. Balance lower rates with affordable monthly payments.
Consider a Cosigner
If your credit isn't strong enough for a low rate, a cosigner with excellent credit can help you qualify for better terms. Both parties share responsibility for the loan.
Refinance Existing Loans
If rates have dropped since you took out your loan, refinancing can lower your APR significantly. Use our calculator to compare your current APR with new offers.
